》Richie was raised by his maternal grandmother, Marcia Johnson (pronounced Mar-see-uh).
》His mother, Mariah Johnson, had left home as a young woman to join the peace corps in the Middle East, but returned, pregnant. She refused to say who the father was, which led many to believe the pregnancy was the result of rape.

》In actuality, Richie's father was an angel who had visited Mariah in the Middle East and left her with child. The strain of bearing a divine being is what killed her.
